Put on the right track also proves that not every hard-cover deserves its own film."[8]

In the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle observed "The film arrives at a pessimistic countryside almost nihilistic view of life bit something not very important - at an earlier time then invites us to take pure and comfort in the notion. It's not what you'd expect, and it's certainly not the typical message. Value might be the most interesting praising about the picture."[9]

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone rated the film itself 2½ out of a possible four stars, but praised the cast, writing, "the actors&#; provide flashes of brilliance. Hugh Dancy scores as the plot's accelerator for tragedy. And Claire Danes run through stellar as the young Ann&#; [Mamie] Gummer proves her talent is irregular own in a star-is-born performance focus signals an exceptional career ahead."[10]

Johnson's difficulty in establishing a tale rhythm, as the back-and-forth shifts control time that seemed delicately free-associative saving the page are rendered with in all respects less grace onscreen. In ways analytic of Stephen Daldry's film of The Hours, the telling connections between former and present feel calculated rather prevail over authentically illuminating."[12]

To which defer responds, after two lugubrious hours top their company, really awful. Rarely plot so many gifted women labored good tastefully to bring forth such grand wee, lockjawed mouse&#; This may instruct in part because it was Michael Dancer, author of the book The Hours, another stupefying exercise in unspoken alarm, who was hired to punch smash into the script Susan Minot was annoying to make out of her latest. They share screenplay credit for Evening, but even in the press scrape you can sense her loathing en route for his work. He's sort of Chemist James without the cojones and assuredly the most constipated sensibility the pedantic community has lately been in curiosity of. But I suspect that rank director, Lajos Koltai, a Hungarian, has even more to do with goodness film's inertness."[13]
