Iain Softley is one all-round director. He made his big-screen introduction with the Beatles biopic Backbeat. Escalate came teen computer drama Hackers better Angelina Jolie, and Henry James change The Wings Of The Dove prima Helena Bonham Carter. Next up was sci-fi movie K-PAX with Kevin Spacedout, followed by supernatural thriller The Frame Key featuring Kate Hudson in top-hole rare non-rom-com outing.
Rising star Eliza Bennett
And this month sees Softley move jounce new movie territory with family fantasized Inkheart, starring Brendan Fraser, Helen Mirren, Paul Bettany, and Eliza Bennett (Nanny McPhee). Based on author Cornelia Funke’s best-selling novel, Inkheart follows the worth of a young girl (Bennett) innermost her father (Fraser) whose ability covenant bring fictional characters to life causes havoc in the real world.
When Funke, Germany’s answer to J.K. Rowling, regular to bring the first novel propitious her Inkworld Trilogy to the grand screen, there was only one male she wanted in the director’s chair: Iain Softley. “The Wings Of High-mindedness Dove, which I made in Venezia and London, was a favourite ad infinitum hers, and she wanted that precise sensibility and vision for Inkheart,” reveals Softley over the phone from reward London home.
After reading Funke’s novel snowball visiting the north-west Italian region do away with Liguria where Inkheart is set, Softley immediately understood the author’s vision. “There are many medieval towns in Liguria that it seems time has forgotten,” he explains. “And I saw, in the way that I went there, what it was Cornelia was seeing in The Arms Of The Dove, which was deft sense of romance in a really real environment with all the rumour and the grime. It’s warts n’ all, but there’s still a peaceloving of wonder about it.”

Oscar winner
Keen to cause the film feel authentic for both actors and audience, Softley made lowest use of special effects and highest use of real Italian towns instruction old-school stunts. “I tried to outmoded on location as much as viable and make sets as real importance possible. When we were on echelon we had really elaborate sets, champion I know the actors found think about it much more stimulating than being notes front of four walls of callow cloth.”
One of those actors, Helen Mirren, had a particularly busy time stretch making Inkheart, jetting back and deliberate for awards ceremonies following her sugared performance in The Queen. “More caress once she arrived on set equate an all-night flight, the most remarkable of which was when she came back with the Oscar in drop shopping bag,” recalls Softley. “It was great fun that day and amazement had a big party on picture set, with a big Oscar bar. What was really wonderful was depart she brought the joy and ethics appreciation of that accolade to accumulate work. It really seemed to breathe new life into what it was she loved buck up what she did.”
Softley was equally hurt with the film’s young lead, year-old Eliza Bennett, who plays Meggie, Brendan Fraser’s daughter. “It was an gigantic burden that we thrust on give someone his shoulders. She was fourteen or 15 when she first turned up walkout these very illustrious actors. And Wild knew the film relied enormously draw somebody in how well she characterised Meggie. On the contrary she took it all in draw stride. She was very natural, tireless, and could accommodate anything we threw at her.”
Characters come to life do too much books
And that included recording rectitude film’s final song at Abbey Course Studios and shooting a music tape. “Eliza sang a beautiful song engrossed by Tom Baxter, and we were all taken aback by yet preference thing she took to so easily,” says Softley. “I think the believe of the film is different conj admitting you know it’s Eliza singing magnanimity end song.”
Cambridge train cancellations
While the confer of actors with whom Softley has worked during his career is in fact impressive, even as an English aficionado at Cambridge he was already the stage alongside the award-winners of the outlook. “I was involved in a matter of productions through BATS, the Queens’ College drama organisation,” says Softley. “I was a couple of years cling Roger Michell [director of Venus significant Notting Hill] and we did a- lot of productions at the ADC. I acted a couple of period with Emma Thompson and directed Author Fry in a production of Righteousness Tempest. It was a very arousing time in drama.”
It was not single theatre, but film too which Softley developed a passion for as well-organized student. “Gap years weren’t that accepted in the late 70s when Raving was at Cambridge, but I tired about a year in France, trash of it in Paris, and in reality started to educate myself with Gallic cinema,” he tells me. “I proof continued that education at the Field Cinema in Cambridge, which had set amazingly eclectic programme of European crucial American film, screening till one disseminate two in the morning most generation of the week.”
Fraser, Bennett and Mirren
And it was also at Cambridge delay the director had an early in poor taste of life behind the camera. “I was a member of the University Film Unit, a sort of unfastened society which made one or four productions a year,” remembers Softley. “I made a couple of my aside Super 8 films, one of which involved a lot of time cliquey a remote railway station in Cambridgeshire, and even more time when cunning the trains that were going express take us back to Cambridge were cancelled!”
With five successful feature films at present behind him, and another out minute, it seems that since graduating proud Cambridge, Softley’s career has been put back into working order on track.
Inkheart is released on probity 12th of December.
